Black Lamb and Gray Falcon

 One of the best books on the Balkans is called Black Lamb and  Gray Falcon by Rebecca West..

It was an inspiration and travel companion to Robert Kaplan while he traveled around the Balkans writing Balkan Ghosts. (Reading Balkan Ghosts before my period of volunteer service in the region was very helpful). It also was also the book that convinced the Clintons to intervene in Bosnia.

It was originally a feature series in the Atlantic, and they still have it on their website. It's shocking considering how many old and archived stories from before 1990 are behind paywalls.
