Questions to Ask in Croatian Geneology
Yes. I have two to three questions for you and your client..
Do you know which region of Croatia? Only certain regions of Croatia have been digitized in FamilySearch, and only certain of those regions have been indexed and placed in FamilySearch. You are more likely to find records from around the border region with Slovenia , tho coast south from Slovenia, (Deltinat, around Rijeka), and the Dalmatian coast, plus a little around Slavonia.
Were their ancestors Catholic or Orthodox? (katolik ili pravoslav). In the last wars certain records were destroyed and certain records were not. For example, my ancestral records from Sveti Rok only exist from about 1879 (the exact year my great grand father was born) until about 1904. All previous records were burned by the Serbs or spoiled by a priest trying to bury them for safekeeping.
Usually, Croatian genealogy requires a bit more work just because of those two or three problems. If you give me some information, I could do some looking around for you on mapire and probably come up with something. I spent two years there, learned the language , and found my family.
