What is kajkavian?

Kajkavian is the dialect of Croatian that is spoken mainly by people in Zagreb, the capital city. It is more closely related to Slovene than other forms of Croatian or even Serbian.

Where did it come from?
Being very close to Slovene. Kaj is the same question word for what in Slovene.

Why does it matter?
You'll be talking to someone in Croatian, speaking the international, standard stokavian BCS, and you'll realize that they understand you and you don't understand them. The vocabulary is different, the question words are Slovene, and you go a bit crazy trying to understand them, especially if it's your first day in Zagreb, where these speakers are the most common.
