The Turks (Ottoman and Modern) and American Missionaries

The next stage of the Andrew Brunson saga will be more interesting than simply his release:
Turkey May Target Mormons Next After Case Against U.S. Pastor: Bloomberg
It will also define US-Turkey relations, and US-Balkan (specifically Bosnia and Albania) for the next half century. This is not the first time that conservative elements of Turkish society have successfully resisted changes social changes. They managed to ban the printing press in the 1740's or so. Here is a paper I found a few years ago about past American (evangelical) missionary activities in the Ottoman Empire about 100 years ago. It should provide an interesting contrast. Armenian LDS converts had to flee into Syria from Turkey one hundred years ago because it was a French enclave--where they could have religious freedom. I don't think that is going to happen this time. The next 50 years are going to be wild from my perspective.
