A good look at how the world looks to an observer of the Balkans. He argues, correctly or incorrectly, depending on how involved you are in the US response to the Republika Srpska's attempts to secede from Bosnia. In this case the Referendum was an attempt to place January 15th or whatever date in 1992 that the Bosnian Serbs seceded and started the war in Bosnia, as a national holiday. Due to the genocide during that time period, ofcourse the national Supreme Court, dominated by Muslims and Croats, didn't want it to pass. They declared it unconstitutional. The Referendum, of course went on, and received a vote total of oh somewhere in the high 90 %!

Come out for the Referendum!!

I was actually in Banja Luka for that. It was the the most dangerous kind of quiet I have ever seen. Noone wanted to talk to us, and when they did, all they talked about was the Referendum. And when they did, some of them like this old guy that used to work for the railroad, said that oh no! The Referendum, it's so aweful!! We're having a town hall meeting about it.
