The Purpose (Svrha)
Hi guys!
So I want to make it clear that the purpose of this blog is to make Balkan and Eastern European History clearer to people in America and Western Europe, with a focus on family history. The problem is that we get so focused on when the tidal wave of history starts hitting us and then we wake up and worry about this region of the world. The same goes for the Middle East, but we have more vested interests there. A couple of really good examples include in 1914 when Gavril Princip fired the fatal shot that started WWI. We did not as a nation feel the consequences until 1915. Then the Lusitania was sunk by the the German Allies of Austria Hungary. Then we had to enter the war when our interests were really starting to get hurt in 1917. The agricultural boom and bust that happened in direct consequence of increased food production in the 20's started the Depression. And on and on and on. The second one was in the nineties, there was a really rough war in the Ex Yugoslavia. We had to intervene, but the problem was that we did not try to understand the people there. We simply believed what our writers and politicians said. They were more right then wrong, but we still need to understand how much influence these nations have on our lives. They are small nations with big impact.
