The Croatian Military Frontier

When I was in Croatia, I met with representatives of the Croatian Institute of History. They are really cool people, who have an interest in preserving their history. Many people have descent from Croatia, but do not realize that they come not so much from Croatian heritage, but from a certain part of Croatia. There are Dalmatia (the sunny Croatia on the Adriatic), Istria (by Italy and Slovenia), Zagorje by the capital Zagreb, Slavonia is the giant eastern part by Serbia, and the Lika (LEAK ah), the middle part of Croatia from where came the famous Nikola Tesla.
In the 1500's to 1600's, many Catholics and Orthodox Christians (Croat and Serbian), fled ahead of the Ottoman Turk army into Croatia out of Bosnia and southern-central Serbia.
This is the empire at its biggest. The army drove all the way to Vienna in Austria and attacked it twice. But then the Austrians took over the Hungarians, which meant the Croatians as well. They started marching back into Eastern Europe and drove them back to Bosnia and Central Serbia. But then they had Croatian and Serbian refugees. What they decided to do was let the landless refugees settle down and become farmers. However, they could be called up to military service at any time. Due to the nearness of the frontier, they were a border regiment. They were much like the National Guard of the time, but with an emphasis on border patrol, and warrior skill. This Military Frontier was the organization designed to be that National Guard. In Croatia, it was comprised of Croats and Serbs in the Lika and Slavonia regions.They guarded it from the 1740's to about 1875.
